The Digital Curation Institute was pleased to welcome Devorah Romanek, Curator of Exhibits and Head of Interpretation at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, University of New Mexico in our second DCI Conversation this year. The event, based on a dialogic format, is part of this year’s DCI Conversations series aimed to explore the many faces of digital curation in contemporary settings of social and cultural significance. It focused on the challenges and opportunities emerging from curatorial encounters with indigenous, subaltern and excluded heritages, and the digital practices of memory, curation and cultural production they engender. Devorah Romanek shared, among other things, her insights and experience on the following themes:

  • The role of digitized and circulated historical images in contemporary discourse concerning identity
  • The accrual of meaning to digitized images, and the ensuing ethical implications of that
  • The role of digital production in Rapid Response initiatives
  • Crowdsourcing and cultural heritage production as related to community memory and practice

Devorah Romanek is a visual culture specialist, anthropologist and curator.  She has worked in museums in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, including the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History and National Museum of the American Indian, and the British Museum. She has curated, co-curated and/or produced more than three dozen exhibitions, both in museums and online. Currently she is the Curator of Exhibits and Head of Interpretation at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico.
