Community Maps and Engagement: Lessons from designing a “Green Map”

Community Maps and Engagement: Lessons from designing a “Green Map”

Dawn Walker

Time and place: Semaphore Demo Room, Robarts first floor (1150), Tuesday, April 19, 9.30am

With the increase in urban agriculture and environmental groups focused on addressing pressing issues they see in their communities, the opportunity exists to better understand what technical barriers individuals face when discovering and becoming involved in these projects. One technology that has been used to increase participation is community maps designed to showcase local projects, initiatives, or features.

As part of a course-based research project (ISD), I designed a technologically-supported intervention to address identified challenges around discovering, and participating in, community-based ‘green’ initiatives. This presentation will cover the current landscape of community mapping in Toronto, the final design and prototype, as well as well as reflections and takeaways from the project.
